Patrick Uchigakiuchi (2012), is a former elementary school and college teacher. He has worked as a volunteer helping families address their relationship problems through conflict resolution and assisting with AIDS hospice care (during the beginning of the AIDS epidemic), and worked as a clinical psychologist, conducting researching and developing substance abuse prevention programs in community settings.

Currently, Uchigakiuchi participates in a trauma-informed care initiative at the Women’s Community Corrections Center (WCCC) in Kailua, Hawai’i. Under the team leadership of Warden Mark Kawika Patterson of WCCC, and of Executive Director Toni Bissen and Puanani Burgess of Pu’a Foundation, the trauma initiative uses the framework of a pu’uhonua, or a place of healing/refuge, for women to “build their beloved community” and to transform their lives. The program addressees various kinds of trauma, including personal and historical trauma (like the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom.)
